Has anyone been watching this? Thursday nights, BBC4.

I thought I'd give it a go, and was totally entranced. David Eagleman has the rare knack of explaining complicated things very simply but without dumbing them down, and using some really good analogies - e.g. likening the brain to a city with specialist areas but a lot of communication, interaction and sometimes conflict between them.

There's a lot of thought-provoking assertions, such as

- most of what we do is dictated by our subconscious, not our conscious mind - that's why we can do something 'on autopilot'

- children need stimulation and new experiences, because that's the way the brain sets up its neural pathways, and why lower animals grow up much more quickly but find it harder to adapt

- getting good at something is the brain cutting out neural pathways that become irrelevant and widening the ones to do with whatever it is

He puts this - and much more - far better than me though!
