During the summer of 1991 she met Father Derrick O'Farrell when he came to visit his older sister DD Dixon who lived next door. Margaret immediately took a liking to Derek as he seemed very honest and caring compared with previous boyfriends and they soon became very close. Between them they managed to restore peace between the Dixons and the Farnhams when they dismantled the unsightly fence that Ron Dixon had built between the two gardens.
Max was unhappy about Margaret's performance as a nanny,as in his view she became more and more unreliable as she continued to see Derek, so one night when she left the Farnham's in the lurch he decided to to sack her and employ a new nanny. Later after Margaret and Derrick had become engaged, Derek to look up a voluntary job with the Catholic Aid For Overseas Development. When a post became available in Romania Derek wanted Margaret to go with him, but even though DD offered to pay her fare Margaret decided to stay behind leaving Derek to go alone. After two brief affairs, one a lesbian relationship with Beth Jordache and the other with Carl Banks Margaret decided to join Derek in Bosnia in April 1994.
