Margaret and Derek

Margaret ClemenceMargaret Clemence first arrived on Brookside close with Max and Patricia Farnham on the 12th September 1990. The Farnhams moved into No. 7 and Margaret was the live-in nanny who was employed to look after young Thomas. Margaret originally came from Oldham and one of the reasons she moved away was the to escape from her boyfriend Kieran who had wanted them to become engaged.

During the summer of 1991 she met Father Derrick O'Farrell when he came to visit his older sister DD Dixon who lived next door. Margaret immediately took a liking to Derek as he seemed very honest and caring compared with previous boyfriends and they soon became very close. Between them they managed to restore peace between the Dixons and the Farnhams when they dismantled the unsightly fence that Ron Dixon had built between the two gardens.

Margaret and DerekAt first Derek was unaware of the strength of Margaret's feelings towards him, and he simply regarded her as a good friend. Margaret was determined to see Derek as often as possible and when he was working she regularly travelled to his parish to see him. When Derek realised that Margaret wanted to become romantically involved he tried to discourage her, but Margaret was not to be put off. DD a devout Catholic was against their relationship and she tried to keep them apart herself, but when this was unsuccessful she decided to see Derek's superior Father Thornton who posted Derek to another parish in the Lake District.

This made Margaret all the more determined to continue with the relationship and so she issued Derek with an ultimatum either the Church or her. Luckily for Margaret he chose her and to seal their relationship they made love at the Farnham's house while Max and Patricia were out one evening. Patricia did all her she could to help Margaret and Derek until that night when unfortunately for Margaret they fell asleep on the sofa and were caught by Patricia when she returned home. To make matters worse they discovered Thomas had been ill while Margaret had been entertaining Derek.

Max was unhappy about Margaret's performance as a nanny,as in his view she became more and more unreliable as she continued to see Derek, so one night when she left the Farnham's in the lurch he decided to to sack her and employ a new nanny.

Later after Margaret and Derrick had become engaged, Derek to look up a voluntary job with the Catholic Aid For Overseas Development. When a post became available in Romania Derek wanted Margaret to go with him, but even though DD offered to pay her fare Margaret decided to stay behind leaving Derek to go alone.

After two brief affairs, one a lesbian relationship with Beth Jordache and the other with Carl Banks Margaret decided to join Derek in Bosnia in April 1994.
