The Dixons Continued....

There was tragedy in store for the Dixon family that was to cause friction between the Corkhills and them for many years.

Jimmy taking drugsAt the wedding of Frank Rodgers to Bev's Sister Lyn Tony was given a ride in the wedding car. Unfortunately Jimmy Corkhill who happened to be high on drugs at the time was also driving a car in the opposite direction. Jimmy's erratic driving caused Frank to swerve and crash killing him and injuring Ron Dixon's son Tony. At the time no one knew that Jimmy had been driving the other car.

Tony was in a comma for several weeks but showed no signs of recovery and eventually died of his injuries. While Tony was in hospital Jimmy tried to make it up to Ron by giving him his full support raising money for Tony, but at his funeral Jimmy could hide his guilt no longer and confessed to Ron that he was the driver of the other car in the accident. Ron was devastated and swore he would never forgive Jimmy for causing Tony’s death.

Business was not so good for Ron at the Trading Post when David Crosbie took up the franchise of the petrol station and opened a mini mart. Ron tried to increase the income by going back on the road with the Moby and managed well until he clashed with another trader Dick Ronson. After each attempting sabotage Dick got the better of Ron by stealing the Moby and having it crushed to a cube at a breakers yard. After this setback Ron closed the Trading Post but it was not long before he saw another business opportunity.

Leanne attacks JacquiWhile Jacqui was in hospital recovering from an attack at Bar Brookie, Ron discovered a letter from JC Bradley saying he intended selling his share of Bar Brookie. Unknown to Jacqui Ron raised the money to buy into the club and surprised her when she came out of hospital by announcing he was her new business partner.

Over the next few months Ron’s investment brought nothing but trouble for both him and Jacqui after a local gangster Callum Finnegan forced them to Jacqui and Callumpay for a protection racket. Jacqui enlisted the help of Barry Grant to get rid of Callum, but in order to raise the money to pay him agreed to be a surrogate mother for the Farnham’s. Barry however was not a patient man, so when he insisted on a full payment for his services Jacqui was forced to hand over ownership of Bar Brookie to him.

While Jacqui was allowed to continue as manageress she had to tell Ron he no longer had an investment in Bar Brookie. Ron was devastated at the news and found it hard to forgive Jacqui.

Ron and BingAfter renting out his house Ron moved in with David Crosbie but later had to move out when David got married and decided to sell the bungalow. Ron then had nowhere to go but Mike asked Jacqui for help on his behalf and she agreed to let him live in the flat above Sinbad's Ron and Mike survey the damageshop in Brookside Parade. Ron soon upset his neighbours by causing a gas explosion which not only wrecked the flat but also half of Brookside Parade.

After this small setback Ron rose from the ashes to start a new business venture hiring out grannies as house keepers, which got off to a shaky start when one of his new employees ruined a customers expensive carpet. Despite this Ron did really well and he was soon looking for someone to take over the day to day running of the business.

Meanwhile Jacqui having had the Farnham's baby ( see surrogacy storyline ) had decided to expand her empire by opening a new club, but first she had to Jacqui and her partnersbuy some new premises. The ideal place seemed to be the old church hall which was only a short distance from Bar Brookie. To raise the money to buy the hall she persuaded Susannah Farnham and Peter Phelan to invest in the new club.

Susannah intended opening a new restaurant within the club while Peter opened a new beauty salon. The purchase of the old church hall was not quite as easy as Jacqui expected when she found herself bidding against Mr’s Finnegan at the auction. Although Jacqui succeeded in out bidding Mr’s Finnegan she had to pay a lot more for the building than she had intended, her money worries were soon solved when Lindsey Phelan offered to put in more cash for a larger share of the club.

Having set the opening date of the Millennium Club for January 1st 1999 everything seemed to be going well until Jacqui heard from the architect that there were structural problems due to water damaged foundations, which meant the club would not be completely finished in time.

Ron and AntheaRon meanwhile, had renewed his friendship with an old girlfriend Anthea Brindley who had applied for vacancy in Ron’s business. Ron was very surprised to see her as he hadn't seen Anthea for about eighteen years and was only too happy to offer her the Job. Ron and Anthea wasted no time in getting re-aquatinted were soon dating regularly. Once their relationship was established Anthea introduced Ron to her eighteen year old daughter Megan who bore a remarkable resemblance to Jacqui.

Mike found himself very attracted to Megan and soon asked her out on a date, but when Anthea saw them together she told Megan to stay away from Mike, which neither Mike or Ron could understand. Later when Anthea discovered that Megan had gone against her advice and was still seeing Mike she was horrified, leaving her no choice but to tell Ron that Megan was in fact his daughter. At first Ron was stunned to discover he had a daughter he knew nothing about, but soon realised that Mike and Megan could not have a relationship.

Jacqui and MeganAnthea and Ron waited in Mikes flat and were relieved upon their return to be told by Mike that he and Megan’s relationship had gone no further than the kissing stage. Mike was quite happy to discover he had a new sister although Jacqui’s reaction was quite different, she found it hard to forgive Ron for having an affair while married to her mum. Megan also found it difficult to accept that Ron was her father.

Ron catches Bev shopliftingAnthea was very happy with her relationship with Ron and decided to ask him to marry her. Ron was delighted at the prospect of them all being one big happy family but he was in for yet another shock, while out shopping with Anthea he bumped into another more recent girlfriend, Bev McLoughlin who appeared to have fallen on hard times and was out on a shop lifting spree.

Ron was non to pleased when he was also detained as her accomplice, but managed to explain his innocence and was released without charge. Bev explained to Ron that she had fallen on hard times and her son Josh had been taken into care as she had been unable to look after him.

Ron took pity on Bev and despite Anthea’s protests decided to let Bev stay in his flat and help her get Josh back. Bev was determined to win Ron back for herself and soon managed to seduce Ron into bed, but Ron saw through her plan and told Bev it would never happen again and swore her to secrecy.

Anthea was even persuaded to let Ron convince the local authorities that he and Bev were together to enable Josh to be returned to Bev. At this stage Bev thought that she and Ron would get back together, but she was disappointed when Ron and Anthea set a date for their wedding.

Ron and Anthea’s wedding plans were put in jeopardy when Bev got drunk at Anthea’s hen party and told Megan that she and Ron had slept together, leaving Megan in doubt over whether to tell Anthea.
