Mike, Jacqui and TonyLife in Brookside Close was never going to be quite the same after the arrival of the Dixon family in October 1990. Ron Dixon and his wife Debbie (known as DD) had three children Mike, Jacqui, and Tony. Ron who had previously been made redundant from his job in a factory was a self employed mobile grocer and ran his business from a large blue van known affectionately as “the Moby”.

Their next door neighbours, the Farnham's were horrified when they arrived home from work to find the Moby parked in their driveway and the Dixon's garden full up with what seemed to be junk. Although the Farnham's nanny Margaret had given permission for Ron to park his van in their drive it was not long before Max was having words with Ron about the state of his garden.

Meanwhile Mike inadvertently caused trouble between Sammy Roger's and her boyfriend Owen when Sammy showed more then a passing interest in him.

Ron and MaxMax Farnham upset Ron when he asked the council to take away some rubbish and they leared the Dixon's garden as well. Ron declared war on the Farnham's and built a brightly coloured fence between the two houses, made up off old house doors, while their youngest son Tony sabotaged the Farnham's garden shed. The dispute only came to an end after Margaret and her boyfriend Derek dismantled the fence.

Jacqui Dixon was a keen swimmer spending most of her time at the local pool. Mike was very protective towards Jacqui, so when he discovered her in a distressed state at a party after being given drugs by someone from school, he was quick to track down the culprit Sinnot, at school and give him a beating.

Later when the police found Jacqui and Mike in possession of drugs, Mike realised that Sinnot must have planted the drugs on them so got his revenge by spiking Sinnot's drink at school. High on drugs and thinking he could fly Sinnot jumped through the first floor window of a classroom, luckily he was not seriously injured. After Sinnot had recovered from his injuries he challenged Mike Dixon to a race in his car. Mike accepted the challenge but when he crashed his car during the race, he and Sinnot called a truce.

DD Dixon a devout catholic found herself in a bit of a moral dilemma when she had to cover for a friend who was having an affair, Ron was not to happy either as his best pal was DD’s friends husband and he resented having to keep quiet about the affair.

DD also strongly disapproved when her brother Derek became involved with Margaret, although Ron was happy to condone the relationship. This difference of opinion caused a lot of friction between Ron and DD.

Meanwhile Ron’s father Cyril arrived on the close and started up a relationship with Julia Brogan who was very keen on getting married, but before she could get him to the alter he died of a heart attack.

Ron Dixon long had the ambition to run his business from a proper shop, so Ron and DDwhen he heard that some new units were available on Brookside Parade he was the first to take up one of the units and opened his new shop the Trading Post in October 1991. Jimmy Corkhill persuaded Ron to let him use the Moby and also to employ Jackie in the trading post, Meanwhile Julia Brogan was also keen to work in his shop, so to keep everyone happy Ron employed them both.

Ron soon suspected them of stealing when he discovered money missing from the till and in the ensuing row they both walked out leaving Ron to cope on his own, he later had to grovel for forgiveness when he discovered it was his own son Mike who was thieving to finance his purchase of a keyboard. Mike had recently started playing in a band and had brought the keyboard which he couldn’t really afford.

Jacqui trapped in fireMeanwhile Jacqui was becoming involved with Darren Murphy, a boy who was a member of a gang that often caused vandalism in the area. One night Jacqui went along when they broke into Manor Park primary school. When they set fire to a classroom they all ran off leaving Jacqui trapped by the flames, Luckily Barry Grant was passing, heard her screams and rescued her in the nick of time. Ron later tried to bring Darren to justice but he retaliated by smashing his shop window.

Margaret and Derek continued their relationship despite DD’s strong disapproval and when Ron loaned them some money for a holiday DD and Ron had a blazing row. When DD decided to leave Ron for a few days this signalled the beginning of the end of their marriage.

Jimmy outside Kowboy KutzRon had more troubles to contend with when Jimmy Corkhill opened up the unit next to his shop selling similar things but at much cheaper prices. As Jimmy was using the unit rent free Ron went on a rent strike in protest, this soon ended when Barry Grant put Jimmy out of business by setting fire to his shop.

As Ron and DD’s marriage continued its downhill slide Ron had a brief affair with Jackie Corkhill which ended when he tried to persuade her to go away to Harrogate for the weekend. Jackie realised that their affair was not such a good idea and decided to stay with Jimmy.

DD's new shopMeanwhile unknown to Ron DD had been saving money to start up a new business venture of her own, so when she announced her intention to open a flower shop next door to the trading post Ron was non to happy that he was kept in the dark.

Ron and DD tried to make a fresh start by going away to Blackpool on a second honeymoon but this attempt failed dismally and the situation was not helped when they returned home to find Mike had held a party in their absence leaving their house in a mess.

Ron decided to go to the Legion to drown his sorrows where he was introduced to Bev by her sister Lyn, Frank Roger's girlfriend. Bev and Ron Ron and Bevseemed to get on really well so when he offered her a job at the Trading Post she eagerly agreed. Ron couldn’t believe his luck and it was not long before he and Bev embarked on an affair. Ron’s new found happiness was short lived, although he had tried to keep his affair a secret from DD she caught them kissing and walked out on Ron to stay at a convent.

Devastated by DD's departure he told Bev that their affair was over. Bev disgusted at being dropped by Ron sought revenge by having a relationship with Ron’s son Mike. When Bev announced a few weeks later that she was pregnant, Mike was none to pleased while Ron was convinced the baby was his.
