The Rogers family moved into Brookside Close in December 1987 as the new tenants of No 7. Harry Cross their landlord had high expectations of his new tenants but he was soon disillusioned when they turned up in an an articulated lorry. Frank, his wife Chrissi and their three children Sammy, Katie and Geoff soon settled in to life in Brookside Close.
Frank decided the easiest way to travel to London would be in the firms lorry, so he arranged a meeting to coincide with a time he knew he would be making deliveries in the area. Unfortunately while he was at the meeting , his lorry which he left in a nearby car park was stolen along with it’s cargo. At first the police thought that Frank was involved in the theft of the lorry, but later after the lorry was recovered with it’s load intact, Frank’s name was cleared.
After nearly a year at No 7 the Rogers were more than surprised when Harry Cross decided to sell the house while neglecting to tell them it was on the market. Frank and Chrissi decided to buy No 7 themselves, but Harry was reluctant to sell to them and refused their offer to buy. Chrissi not one to give up easily, managed to fool Harry by putting in a lower offer under an assumed name, Harry, by this time was worried he may not be able to sell the house for the asking price, and agreed to accept the offer, thinking that he had sold the house to a wealthy family he tells Chrissi that they will soon have to move out. Frank and Chrissi decided to have a bit of fun at Harry’s expense, so on the completion date in November 1998 the Rogers family arrive on the close in a limousine dressed as Arabs. when Harry comes out to greet them he was flabbergasted to discover the Arabs were in fact the Rogers. During the first few months of 1989 Chrissi spent a lot of time in discussions with Geoff’s school as he was having a lot of problems in class, it was eventually discovered he was dyslexic. Chrissi was not happy with the school proposals to help Geoff's dyslexia and for a time kept him home from school having decided to teach him herself. When this did not work out as planned Frank convinced Chrissi it would be best if Geoff returned to school, as he believed that Geoff's ability to play football was more important. Chrissi was delighted to be told that Geoff was to receive specialist tuition from a peripatetic teacher, while both Geoff and Frank were pleased when he was offered a trial to play for Tranmere rovers.
They moved into No 5 in May 1989 but it was not long before Frank discovered he Hadn’t brought such a bargain after all. While investigating a musty smell in the bathroom he discovered many of the floor board joists were rotten and needed replacing at a considerable cost. During the early part of 1989 Sammy their teenage
daughter discovered she had an admirer, Owen Daniels. their relationship
rapidly developed but hit a They didn't stay apart for long though and despite a few more rows were soon back together. One evening Sammy persuaded Owen to go out with a group of her friends for a night out. When they were picked up by two lads in a flash car Owen suspected the car is stolen, and his fears were confirmed when they were followed by the police. During the high speed chase that followed, their car went out of control and crashed and both lads were killed. Sammy and Owen were both seriously injured and although Sammy soon recovered Owen is left crippled, unable to walk. Sammy unable to cope with the guilt took up drinking to try to blot out what happened.
Frank was having a difficult time, the company he worked for decided to close down the lorry maintenance department and put the work out to contractors. Frank decided to help organise a workers co-operative, which put in an offer for the work. When the co-operative won the contract Frank was offered a job as Assistant Transport manager which he turned down as he preferred to continue working with his work mates as a driver.
