The Corkhill Family Tree

Billy Corkhills Family

Doreen CorkhillThe Corkhill family first appeared in Brookside when Billy Corkhill, his wife Doreen and their two children Rod and Tracy moved into No 10 Brookside Close in September 1985. They soon made their presence felt when Billy decided to fit widow shutters to the front of the house and paint them white, much to the dismay of their neighbours.

Billy Corkhill worked as an electrician for a local company in what he thought was a secure job. Billy’s daughter Tracy persuaded him to let her go on a skiing holiday, but while away she had an affair with one of her teachers. When Tracy returned from Holiday the word soon spread around the school Billy Corkhillabout her affair and it was not long before it reached Billy's ears. The thought of this teacher and his “ little girl ” together put Billy into a rage, he went to the school found the teacher and thumped him, as a result Billy ended up in court on an assault charge and although he only received a suspended sentence Billy was sacked from his job.

Rod CorkhillMeanwhile his son Rod announced to the family that he intended to join the police force much to their amazement.

Doreen and BillyTheir were difficult times ahead for Billy and Doreen as Billy struggled to pay the bills. He was eventually offered a job working away from home in Tunbridge Wells. Billy reluctantly accepted the job but just when he thought his money worries were over the contract he was working on finished early and he was unemployed once more.

Desperate for money Billy listened to his Brother Jimmy who suggested an easy way to make money would be to burgle his own house and claim on the insurance. Rod had asked Billy and Doreen to come to his passing out parade at police college, so Jimmy suggested this would be a good time for him to burgle the house.

When the day arrives Jimmy breaks in, moves all the valuables into the loft then vandalises the house by spraying paint over the walls. Later when Billy returns with Doreen he is horrified by all the damage and the distress caused to Doreen. Billy soon regretted letting Jimmy talk him into this situation as he did his best to make it up to his wife.

Their marriage came under great strain over the months ahead as the debts continued to grow. Doreen considered having an affair with her boss while Billy got involved in a supermarket robbery. The result of all this trauma was the break up of their marriage in 1987 when Doreen left Billy to live with her mother.

Meanwhile Tracy having left school decided to join a YTS scheme as a trainee hair dresser but was soon disillusioned when she found herself making Tracy at worktea most of the time. Tracy left the salon after a few months but managed to find employment at another hairdressing salon. The new Job seemed a lot better with Tracy learning the hairdressing trade alongside other trainee's. It was not long before Tracy found a new problem in the form of her new boss Gerrard who continually pestered her.

One evening after work Gerrard made a pass at Tracy but she pushed him away and ran from the salon. The next day when Tracy was just a few minutes late for work Gerrard sacked her. Tracy thought this very unfair so decided to claim unfair dismissal, she won the case, Gerrard was transferred and Tracy reinstated. Tracy continued with her hairdressing career and eventually had her own business on Brookside Parade.

Billy’s son Rod settled into his career in the Police Force and it was while working on a case that he met his first serious girlfriend Kirsty. Rod and Kirsty got on very well and later became engaged. When Kirsty started making wedding day plans Rod began to feel under pressure and decided the best way to relax was with a colleague from work WPC Emma Reid. Kirsty spotted them together during Rods 21st birthday outing and promptly called of the engagement.

Billy and Sheila get marriedBilly was to find romance in his life when he let Sheila Grant stay at No 10 after she separated from her husband and their house was sold. Sheila and Billy's friend ship rapidly developed into love and although there was a temporary hitch when Doreen returned for a short while to try and reclaim her husband. Billy and Sheila later married and moved away to Basingstoke to start a new life together.

While Billy and Sheila’s relationship was developing Rod started dating Diana Spence a young pharmacy assistant. Rod was puzzled by the way Diana Rod and Dianaseemed slow to understand things and it eventually transpired that she was illiterate. Rod did not let this spoil their relationship and encouraged Diana to take lessons to read and write Rod and Diana married in 1992 but trouble was not far away, when within weeks of their marriage Rod was injured while trying to prevent a robbery on Brookside parade. Diana persuaded Rod to quit the police force and he took up employment in security.

Diana became good friends with neighbour Peter Harrison but later at a party she accused him of date rape when he mis-interpreted her actions. Road and Diana’s marriage had already been going through a bad patch, so when Peter was found not guilty in court Rod decided that Diana must have been to blame and left her moving away from Brookside close for good.
