One of the first familes to move into the close were the Grants in 1982 as a family of five, Bobby and Sheila and their three children Damon, Karen and Barry Grant who is the oldest. While living in a council estate for many years Bobby had worked hard to buy the house on Brookside Close. Bobby worked in a local factory and later became involved with the union this caused a strain on his marriage to Shelia.
Barry was a bit of a lady's man and had affairs with many different women, even with his mate's wife Sue which was to end in tragedy. Barry later was to build a parade of shops now called Brookside Parade as well as being the partner in a restaurant and owner of La Luz night club. Later he sold some of his premises and went abroad. He recently returned for a while and soon became involved with the Corkhills daughter Lindsey while sorting out a protection racket for Jaqui at Bar Brookie.
Their happiness was short lived when Damon was stabbed to death while trying to prevent a robbery at their temporary home. Debbie later discovers she is pregnant with Damons child and despite her fathers interference she decides to keep the baby. The latest addition to the Grant family was Sheila's daughter Claire who was born in 1985 before the break up of the Grant's marriage.

Bobby and Shelia
later seperated, had the house sold and Shelia moved in with Billy Corkhill
across the road. 
Barry grant who was the black sheep of
the family was invloved with many money making scams with his friend Terry,
at first this just involved selling knock-off gear but later he became
more ambitious and was soon involved with local ganster Tommy Mcardle.
Both Barry and Terry recived a beating when they crossed Tommy but while
Terry ended up in hospital Barry escaped with a few cuts and bruises.
Karen Grant was always
a good student at school and later becomes involved in a relationship
with Guy who she moves in with but as the flat was small and dingy this
relationship did not last long and she left him to go university in London.
Damon Grant unlike
his sister struggled at school and after leaving school became enrolled
on a YTS scheme as a painter/decorator. The promise of a job at the end
of the course came to nothing when all he received was a letter of recommendation.
Soon after this
he met Debbie who was still at school at the time, and her father did
not approve of the relationship Damon was determined to make the relationship
work between them and moved away with Debbie to York.
