Character Profile......Lindsey Corkhill
Last Updated March 16th 2002
Lindsey arrived on the doorstep
of No 10 Brookside Close in November 1995 looking for a place to stay
after leaving her husband Garry. A short while later Garry turned up and
reluctantly Jimmy allowed them both to stay.
Lindsey’s marriage was not a happy one but they
had stayed together for the sake of their daughter Kylie. Jimmy found
them both jobs working for him at his taxi firm “ Korky Kars “. Although
Jimmy told everyone his new business was perfectly legal, it was really
a cover for his drug dealing and it was not long before Garry found out
about the scam and persuaded Jimmy to let him become involved.
Meanwhile Lindsey had taken more than a passing
interest in Mike Dixon who also lived in Brookside Close. Mike and Lindsey
got on well, and were soon involved in a serious relationship.
Lindsey by this time had decided she wanted
to get away from Garry, so she and
Mike decided to start a new life together by emigrating to Australia.
They tried to keep this a secret from Garry but he found out about their
plans, and on the day of Lindsey and Mike’s departure he planted some
drugs in a toy he had given to Kylie.
On the flight to
Australia there was a stop over at Bangkok where the drugs were discovered
and both Lindsey and Mike were arrested. The authorities in Bangkok didn't’t
believe that neither Lindsey or Mike or Lindsey knew about the drugs,
and it was only after several weeks negotiation with the British government
that Lindsey was released.
Mike had to stay in jail a while longer until
Lindsey managed to persuade Garry to confess to the police that he had
planted the drugs. Garry had agreed to do this on condition that Lindsey
went back with him, something that Lindsey didn’t want to do but felt
she had no choice.
When Mike returned home he was devastated to
discover Lindsey and Garry were back together. Garry was very keen to
resume his marital relationship with Lindsey but she had other ideas and
did all she could put him off, eventually though Garry ran out of patience
and resorted to raping Lindsey.
Lindsey confided in Jackie what had happened
so she arranged for a local drug baron to visit Garry having told them
he was dealing drugs on their patch. Garry fled the country which allowed
Lindsey and Mike to get back together, but their happiness was short lived.
Mike had become obsessed with making a video and writing a book about
their experiences in Bangkok, something that Lindsey preferred to forget. This
led to many arguments between them so eventually they split up for good.
Lindsey’s next love interest was Peter Phelam a hair stylist
and partner in the hair salon on Brookside Parade. Peter had a completely
different personality to either Mike or Garry and Lindsey was very attracted
to him, luckily the feeling was mutual and they were soon in a steady
relationship.
Peter was very much in love with Lindsey so
was delighted when she agreed to marry him, but just when they thought
they had a good future together, Barry Grant appeared on the scene.
Barry was instantly attracted to Lindsey the
moment he saw her and she didn’t take much persuading when he asked if
he could accompany her when she went for an singing audition on “ Sing
Like a Star “. Lindsey got more than she bargained for when she was taken
hostage, due to Barry’s involvement with local gangster Callum Finnegan.
Lindsey was almost raped by Callum but was rescued just in time by Barry
Grant.
Despite this Lindsey was still attracted to
Barry and seemed to like all the excitement but eventually dropped him
when she discovered he was married.
After this short fling Lindsey did her best
to win back Peter who was just a little peeved about her involvement with
Barry. Eventually Peter decided to forgive Lindsey and they agreed to
get married, while at the same time he and Lindsey went into partnership
investing in a new beauty salon at the Millennium Club.
About
this time Garry arrived back on the scene, demanding money from Lindsey
otherwise he would apply for custody of Kylie. Lindsey fed up with his
demands and frightened of losing Kylie, in desperation sought help from
Rose Finnegan who supplied her with a gun to scare him off.
The wedding went ahead but the marriage was
only a few weeks old before Lindsey discovered Peter was having an affair
with an old flame Frankie. Lindsey wasted no time in throwing Peter out,
their marriage was over.
Despite this Lindsey increased her investment
in the club, quite happy to run the salon on her own. The opening of the
club suffered continual delays and Jacqui Dixon eventually discovered
it was being sabotaged by the Finnegan's who wanted the club for themselves.
Jacqui was keen to ask for Barry Grant’s help as he was the clubs main
investor, but agreed to let Lindsey approach the Finnegan's first.
Rose Finnegan asked Lindsey to join forces with
her and take the club from Jacqui and Susannah and although Lindsey initially
agreed, she changed her mind when Callum appeared at the meeting.
Lindsey vowed to get revenge on Callum
for the attempted rape by stealing money from him and using it to buy
Barry Grant’s share of the club. Although Lindsey managed to succeed in
this, Callum soon discovered who had stole his money and decided to go
after her.
Callum waited outside Bar Brookie one night
and when Lindsey left on her own he grabbed her intending to get his revenge
by raping her. Luckily for Lindsey Jacqui Dixon left the bar a short while
later and disturbed Callum before he could complete his attack.
Lindsey decided
to turn the tables on Callum, a few days later she confronted Callum at
Jacqui's flat and threatened him with a gun. Jacqui alarmed at what could
happen called Rose Finnegan who arrived with Alisdair. They persuaded
Lindsey to release Callum by promising to keep him away from her.
At first Lindsey thought she had got away with
stealing Callum's money but Rose paid her a visit a few days later leaving
Lindsey in no
doubt that Rose expected her to return the money by Christmas.
Although Lindsey was now the main share holder
of the Millennium Club she had to allow Jacqui to become half owner of
the club due to the fact that she was the only one who could get a drinks
license.
Lindsey found that living with Jimmy and Jackie
was far from peaceful as they continued to argue, so decided to move out
of No 10 and into No 9 next door.
When Jackie invited Lindsey and Kylie on holiday
she was only too pleased to accept, realising that she need a break after
the pressure of last few months
On her return from holiday Lindsey soon became
more involved with both Susannah's restaurant and the Millennium Club
when she agreed to cover for Jacqui and Susannah when they were away for
a while.
Although Susannah was happy enough, Jacqui was
far from pleased to discover Lindsey had threatened the building contractor
with violence if he failed to complete work at the club on time. As a
result of her threats the contractor refused to complete the work leaving
Jacqui to find a replacement.
Lindsey invited both Rose and Alisdair
Finnegan to the opening of the Millennium club but was horrified when
Callum also turned up. Callum only stayed for a while, but when he left
he commented to Lindsey that he thought the club should go down a bomb.
A few minutes later Lindsey received a phone call saying a bomb had been
planted in the club. Before everyone could leave the club the bomb exploded,
killing Greg Shadwick, and injuring several others including Susannah.
Lindsey later had a visit from Callum who suggested
she should leave the area and allow him to take over the Millennium club
or face the consequences. Callum gave Lindsey just a few days to comply,
but instead of leaving Lindsey enlisted the help of Jimmy to hire a hit
man to kill Callum while keeping a low profile herself by hiding out at
Susannah's house.
Unfortunately for Lindsey the hit man met an
untimely end and Callum realising what Lindsey was up to soon discovered
her hiding place.
While Jimmy was out the way Callum called
on Lindsey to teach her a lesson she wouldn't forget. With the help of
his female accomplice Callum gave Lindsey a severe beating. While in hospital
recovering from her injuries Lindsey had another visit from Callum who
threatened her with more violence unless she handed over her share of
the club to him.
Lindsey felt she
had no choice but to leave the area when she left hospital, so when Shelley
( someone she met at the clubs opening night ) offered her a place to
stay, Lindsey was quick to take up the offer despite the fact Shelly was
a lesbian.
While staying at Shelley's Lindsey had a meeting
with Rose Finnegan, when she tried to convince her that Callum had tried
to kill both Rose and Alisdair when he planted the bomb at the club. Rose
would not listen to Lindsey until she could show her real proof that Callum
was responsible for the explosion.
Later Lindsey arranged a meeting with Callum
at The Shelf restaurant, on the pretence
of selling him her share of the club. Lindsey arranged for Rose to be
there as well, sitting out of sight so she could listen in on their conversation.
Rose overheard Callum admit to setting up the
explosion, and that he didn't care about Alisdair or Rose almost being
killed. This was all the proof that Rose needed, so she told Callum to
leave the country or she would tell Alisdair that he was responsible for
the explosion.
As
Christmas approached, Lindsey began to panic about paying Rose back the
money she owed, and after failing to get a bank loan she resorted to stealing
the takings from The Millennium Club. Jacqui soon discovered what Lindsey
had done and threatened to call the police if Lindsey didn't pay the money
back.
To make matters worse for Lindsey, even with
the money from the club she still did not have enough to repay all the
money owed. Rose was not at all sympathetic when Lindsey suggested paying
by instalments and instead told Alisdair about Lindsey's debt. Callum
took the money that Lindsey had stolen
and insisted on setting up a drugs operation in the club as a way of paying
back the rest of the money.
Lindsey had no choice but to accept this arrangement
but hoped to keep the drugs operation a secret. It was not long though
before Jimmy found out, and refused to have anything to do with her.
During
a New Year's eve party at the club Mick Johnson's daughter Gemma sneaked
into the club and was soon taking drugs. As a result of an overdose Gemma
collapsed, was rushed off to hospital, the police were called in and the
club closed down.
When Jimmy and Jackie found out about Gemma,
they threw Lindsey out of their house
but later relented after she promised to change her ways. Now that the
club was closed Lindsey had no way of paying back the money to either
Jacqui or the Finnegans, so with Jacqui and Nathan's help she managed
to convince the Finnegans to wait until Lindsey had sold her house to
repay her debt.
Now
that Lindsey had no income from the club, she reluctantly accepted a job
working for Jackie at the garage. Lindsey confused about her sexuality
had hoped to start a relationship with Shelley, but she was not really
interested and seemed more keen on Jackie.
Lindsey found it difficult to settle in at
her job in the garage and at first was determined to find something that
had more potential and better pay. When Dave told Lindsey about a job
at a casino Lindsey wasted no time in applying for it. The interview seemed
to go well and the boss was impressed with what Lindsey told him about
her experience in running the Millennium Club and that she now helped
managed a retail business.
After the interview Lindsey was confident she
would be offered the job, until the boss of the casino called in at the
garage for petrol where Lindsey was serving behind the counter. He realised
that Lindsey had lied to him about her job in the retail business so she
didn't get the job.
The
job at the garage was Lindsey's only employment and didn't pay well so
when she was offered the chance of going on a Hen week in Benidorm with
Jacqui, she was sure she would never be able to afford it. Jimmy though
had other ideas and gave Lindsey most of his and Jackie's savings to pay
for the holiday. Lindsey was delighted by Jimmy's generosity, but Jackie
was not so impressed.
After Callum had been forced to leave the country
by his brother Alisdair Lindsey thought
she was free of him for good but soon after returning from her holiday
she heard some disturbing news. Dave told her that both Alisdair and Rose
had been killed in a shooting incident and that he believed Callum could
be responsible. After two more shootings were reported and Kylie came
home from school saying a man had given her sweets Lindsey was sure Callum
was back.
Lindsey decided to send Kylie away from the
close for safety, intending to leave herself as soon as she was paid,
but when Shelley asked her to stay and go to Bev's party, Lindsey decided
to stay a while longer. Meanwhile Dave had mysteriously disappeared.
At
the party Lindsey and Shelley realised they were attracted to each other
so later Lindsey invited Shelley to the Lakes for a weekend away to enable
them to get to know each other better. While Lindsey was waiting outside
Bev's Bar for Shelley Dave drove up in a car and insisted that Lindsey
got in. Lindsey did as she was asked but when she got in the back of the
car she was horrified to see Callum sitting there.
Lindsey
was taken to a deserted building on an industrial estate where Callum
tried to make her feel at ease before asking her to marry him. His proposal
took Lindsey completely by surprise and although she was tempted by the
thought of living a life of luxury in Portugal the thought of being with
Callum made her skin crawl so she turned him down. Callum was enraged
by Lindsey's refusal and ordered Dave to kill her. Dave let Lindsey go
instead and while she made her escape he turned his gun on Callum and
killed him.
Shelley was furious with Lindsey for letting
her down and didn't believe her story about Callum's proposal. Lindsey
persisted in trying to make Shelley realise she was telling the truth
as she was very keen to start a relationship with her. Eventually Lindsey
and Shelley became lovers and although Lindsey was delighted about their
involvement and wanted to tell the world that they were together, Shelley
wanted to to keep the relationship to themselves.
Despite
being discreet it was not long before Bev and Lance discovered their secret,
although they both promised not to tell anyone else. Dave's friendship
with Lindsey
soon caused problems between them, as Shelley suspected they were more
than just friends and demanded to know what really happened the night
Callum was killed. Dave was adamant that Lindsey shouldn't tell Shelley
about Callum's death, which made Shelley even more suspicious that something
was going on between Dave and Lindsey. At one point Shelley told Lindsey
their relationship was over, but Lindsey managed to persuade her to take
her back.
Lindsey was completely committed to Shelley
but the feeling was not mutual as Jackie still held an attraction for
Shelley. Jackie was having problems coping with Jimmy, and when he was
admitted to a psychiatric unit for assessment, she found this very upsetting.
Lindsey had to go away on a course, so when she asked Shelley to keep
an eye on Jackie, she jumped at the chance.
As
soon as Lindsey had left Shelley called to see Jackie and offered to stay
the night. Jackie was very distraught at the time and needed someone to
talk to, and so agreed to let Shelley stay. That night Shelley heard Jackie
crying in her bedroom so went in to
comfort her. Jackie was grateful for this but when Shelley tried to kiss
her, Jackie pulled away in horror. Shelley decided to leave but Jackie
asked her to stay as she didn't want to be left alone. As Shelley held
Jackie she was in no doubt that Jackie had feelings for her. The next
morning when Jackie woke up she was horrified to find Shelley asleep beside
her and later strongly denied having any feelings for Shelley.
When Lindsey returned from her course Shelley
told her that their relationship was over and that she never really loved
her. Lindsey was heartbroken by this and didn't believe Shelley when she
said there was no one else in her life.
Jackie hadn't realised that Lindsey was involved
with Shelley and felt guilty that she was the cause of them breaking up.
Lindsey was certain Shelley was involved with another woman despite her
denial, and was determined to find out who could be so special to Shelley.
It was not long before Shelley's infatuation with Jackie led to Lindsey
finding them together in a compromising situation.
Shelley managed to trick Jimmy into allowing
her the house while Jackie was sleeping
upstairs. Jimmy had been on his way out when Shelley called, but as he
had no idea about what Shelley had in mind, he agreed to allow Shelley
to wait in the house until Jackie woke up. As soon as Jimmy had left Shelley
crept into Jackie's room while she was asleep and got into bed alongside
her. A short while later Lindsey returned home and was devastated to find
them in bed together.
Jackie had a rude awakening when Lindsey threw
a jug of water over her, and was horrified to find Shelley lying beside
her. Despite Jackie protesting her innocence, Lindsey refused to believe
that she wasn't having a relationship with Shelley. Jackie was furious
with Shelley and told her to stay away, but Shelley hinted that she might
tell Jimmy about the alleged affair. Later Lindsey forcefully persuaded
Shelley to leave her flat and return to her cottage, in order to protect
Jimmy from hearing about the affair.
Even
though Jackie insisted she had never had any feelings for Shelley, Lindsey
refused to forgive her and later caused trouble between Jackie and Jimmy
when Jackie tried to tell Jimmy what happened that night with Shelley.
After hearing what Jackie had to say
Jimmy was prepared to forgive her, but when Lindsey heard about her confession
she told Jimmy that Jackie knew that Shelley was in love with her before
they spent the night together. Jimmy was outraged by Jackie's apparent
deception and decided to file for divorce. As the relationship between
Jimmy and Jackie went from bad to worse, Lindsey took Jimmy's side in
any argument until eventually Jackie would have no option but to leave
the house to him and Lindsey.
Jackie though was determined to stay, but Jimmy
decided to spilt the house in two with Jackie being confined to the upstairs.
This made life very difficult for Jackie, particularly when Jimmy decided
to entertain women friends downstairs. Eventually Jackie could take no
more and decided to leave, taking William with her, but not before making
her peace with Lindsey.
Working in the garage was not Lindsey's idea
of a permanent career, so when she heard of a job going at Jacqui's health
club Lindsey decided to apply. Unfortunately the job was already taken,
but Jacqui suggested she could apply for a job in Newcastle instead. Lindsey
was reluctant to leave Jimmy on his own, but after he persuaded her that
he could manage Lindsey decided to apply. A short while later Lindsey
was offered the job and left Liverpool to live in Newcastle with Kylie.

television came in 1991 when she was offered a part in Brookside playing
Lindsey Corkhill. It was only a brief appearance and Claire decided she
wanted to see the world and so joined a cruise ship as a singer for four
years. When she returned in 1995 Claire wrote to the producer to ask if
they could bring back Lindsey into Brookside. At the time the producers
had decided to move Jackie and Jimmy into the close so luckily for Claire
they agreed to move Lindsey in with them.
In 2001 after appearing in the program Celebrity

Claire's dream of appearing in a West End musical came true when she was
offered a lead role playing the part of Roxy Hart in Chicago at the Adelphi
