Character Profile......Emily Shadwick

Last Updated March 10th 2002

Emily Shadwick arrived on Brookside Close in 1998, with her Parents Greg Emily and Kellyand Margi, sister Nikki and brother Jason. Emily is the youngest member of the family and still goes to the Brookside Comprehensive school. Her best friend on the close is Kelly Musgrove despite the fact that Kelly’s older brother Luke has been accused of the drug rape of Emily’s sister Nikki.

Although Emily doesn’t have a regular boyfriend she does have an admirer on the close, Leo Johnson. Emily and Kelly once went to a party held by Leo and his mate Tinhead , but the evening was spoilt when Tinhead tried to get Kelly drunk.

Emily is good at sports, particularly running and is encouraged by both Greg and Margi to do well at school events. Mr Abbot her school athletics instructor constantly tries to get Emily to use all her spare time training and although she does her best, Mr Abbot never praises her efforts.

Emily and Mr AbbottAfter a recent school athletics event Margi caught Mr Abbot shouting at Emily and reported him to the school headmaster.

Emily also enjoys working on the school play being organized by Jimmy Corkhill who also suspected she was being bullied by Mr Abbot. During rehearsals for the play Jimmy intervened when Mr Abbot tried to speak to Emily, unfortunately this ended in a scuffle, during which Mr Abbot was pushed to the ground.

After the incident at the school with Mr Abbott, things seem to settle down for Emily, although other family troubles with Nikki and arguments between Greg and Margi sometimes made life at home unpleasant.

Emily's life was to change for ever after an explosion at the Millennium Club caused the death of both her father Greg and brother Jason. She found it very difficult to accept she would no longer see them. When Margi decided to take up a job offer in Brussels after finding out about Greg's affair with Susannah, Emily decided to to stay behind and live with her sister Nikki at No. 6.

Jessie, Emily, Jerome and NikkiWhen Emily started up a relationship with Tim, Jessie decided to to move into the bungalow with them her to make sure that neither of them got into trouble. However it was not long before Emily managed to pull the wool over her eyes, and began to take time off school. When Tim suggested they apply for a credit card in Greg's a name Emily thought it was a good idea, and after it arrived they went on a spending spree together.

Emily was very resentful of Susannah who she blamed for her father's death, and set out to get revenge. First she stole Susannah's handbag, then used her credit card to order some manure which was dumped on her front garden. Later she used Susannah's house keys so that she and Tim could use Susannah's bed, but before they could do anything Susannah and Max returned home unexpectedly, but they made an escape through an upstairs window.

Emily and Tim in BlackpoolEmily decided to continue her vendetta against Susannah by persuading Tim to hot wire her car, which they then stole and drove to Blackpool. Here Emily convinced Tim into helping her steal from a sales rep. at the guest house where they were staying. On the way back from Blackpool they set alight to Susannah's car.

After they returned to Brookside Emily was determined to continue making Susannah's life a misery by asking for Tim's help to use Gemma's computer. By now Tim was beginning to get fed up with Emily's vendetta against Susannah but Emily and Timreluctantly agreed to help her download some pornographic pictures to use against Susannah. With these pictures Emily and Tim printed out some prostitute calling cards with Susannah's phone number on them. The cards were distributed around the close and Brookside Parade resulting in Susannah receiving obscene phone calls. Susannah suspected Emily was behind this and even called the police, but couldn't prove anything.

After this latest campaign Emily decided to try her hand at burglary. Emily got a job at the hairdressers on Brookside Parade and while working she overheard one of the clients Cheryl talking about her coming holiday. While Cheryl was on holiday Emily decided to burgle her house and once more persuaded Tim to help.

Once inside the house though Emily decided to smash up the place, Tim was disgusted by her behaviour and walked out saying he was finished with Emily. After Cheryl returned from holiday she was devastated by the state of her house and Emily who saw how upset she was realised she had gone to far. Tim agreed to go back with Emily after she explained how sorry she was and wanted to change her ways.

Emily and Tim on camping holidayEmily thought she fooled everyone into believing she was innocent of the crimes against Susannah and thought she could make a fresh start by returning to college. Emily's luck was about to run out, for while on a camping holiday with Tim she accidentally recorded on video a taped confession where she admitted carrying out various crimes during her vendetta against Susannah. It wasn't until they watched the holiday video at home that they realized it contained Emily's confession. They tried to stop anyone else seeing the tape, but unknown to them Mick picked it up and took it to Susannah's thinking it was a comedy video.

It was not long before Mick and Susannah decided to relax by watching what they thought was the " Carry on Camping " comedy video. Instead Susannah was horrified to see Emily's confession which confirmed her suspicions that Emily had been behind the hate campaign. Although furious with Emily Susannah decided not to involve the police and just tell Jessie instead, as she thought Emily had suffered enough with the deaths of her father and brother. However when she called round to the bungalow Jessie she was out, so Susannah told Nikki about the video but also said she wouldn't be reporting it to the police. Nikki immediately called Emily home from college and told her about the tape. Emily panicked by the thought of Susannah seeing the tape sought reassurance from Tim.

When Emily returned to the bungalow with Tim they saw a police car parked outside of Susannah's house, and thinking that the police had been called they decided to run away, stealing Ray's car to make their escape. After they were well clear of Brookside Tim tried to persuade Emily to return to the close letting him take the blame for her crimes, but Emily was determined they should go on the run together.

EmilyEmily relied on Tim to support her and so was pleased when he found some bar work in a pub. She was even happier when the bar owner allowed her to stay in the Bar with Tim and even bought her drinks. The bar owner had an ulterior motive and after making sure Tim was out on an errand he plied Emily with drink before trying to seduce her. Emily wasn't that drunk though and tried to fight him off. It was at this moment that Tim returned and during the resulting fight Emily hit the owner with a bottle.

Once again they were on the run but this time they were running out of money. Emily suggested they should call on Brian a gay salesman they had met previously in Blackpool. Emily had planned to blackmail Brian by threatening to tell his family that he was gay, but Brian refused to hand over any money. Emily was in a vindictive mood and told Brian's family about him being a homosexual. Brian's wife was disgusted by this revelation and decided to leave him, taking their children with her.

Emily, Tim and BrianEmily believed she had done the right thing by telling Brians wife, but Tim thought Emily had gone too far this time and decided they should both return to Brookside and confess to the police. Emily agreed to do this but just as Tim was confessing to stealing Susannah's car, Emily discovered that Susannah hadn't reported them after all. It was too late though, as the police then asked to see the video and as a result they were both charged. Emily and Tim were both released on bail with Tim staying at Micks house and Emily with Jessie.

Tim couldn't stand the thought of Emily going to prison, so he persuaded her to let him take all the blame when they appeared in front of the magistrate. Although Emily agreed to this she was distraught when Tim pleaded guilty to all the charges against him, although he was allowed home on bail pending his appearance in court.

After talking to Nikki Emily released that Susannah was trying to help her and make amends for her part in causing Greg's death. Emily decided to talk to Susannah but was devastated when Susannah revealed she had never loved Greg. Emily left Susannah's house in a rage, determined to get revenge for her fathers death.

Emily and SusannahLater that same evening, the night before her marriage to Mick, Emily called on Susannah again. After drinking a few glasses of Champaign she tried to kill her with the empty bottle. Max arrived just in time to stop Emily hitting Susannah, but instead of throwing Emily out Susannah explained that she too had lost loved ones when her own children Matthew and Emily were killed in a car crash. After listening to Susannah relate how she and Max had felt when her children died, Emily no longer hated her.

The next day Emily discovered that Mick had called the wedding off and Susannah had apparently gone away for a few days. Later Emily was shocked to learn that Susannah had in fact fallen down the stairs that night and died of her injuries.

Emily in courtWhen Tim appeared in court he pleaded guilty to all charges and was sent to prison, while Emily was sentenced to community service by a juvenile court. As part of her punishment Emily had to do some household chores for Cheryl, but she soon turned this to her advantage when she discovered Cheryl had made a fraudulent claim on her house insurance.

Emily really missed being with Tim while he was in prison but managed to visit him without Jessie finding out. It was during one of these visits that Emily surprised Tim by announcing she wanted to get married as soon as he was released from prison. Emily was concerned about how they would manage once they were married and so decided to try and earn some extra cash.

When Carl ( a photographer she had met earlier at Jeromes Party ) suggested she could earn good money by posing topless for some magazine pictures, Emily agreed. Later Emily realised she had made a big mistake and so with Nikki's help managed to persuade Carl to give them all the negatives.

Unfortunately Carl still had at least one photo on his computer, and a short while later Emily's picture appeared in a girlie magazine. A copy of the magazine soon found it's way into the prison where Tim was being held. He was furious when he saw the picture and told Emily they were finished. By the time Emily visited him again Tim had decided to forgive her and so the planned wedding would go ahead.

Emily and TimJessie was against the idea of Emily and Tim being together, so they arranged the wedding in secret. On the day of the wedding Emily only just made it to the registry office in time after being held up at the hair salon. While Tim wore a traditional suit, Emily opted for something a little different and got married wearing a white boob tube, mini skirt, white fur coat and a cowgirl Stetson.

Jessie found out about the wedding but was too late to prevent them getting married. She argued with Tim outside the registry office, but he ignored her and drove away with Emily in a stretch Limo, to spend their first night in a hotel. The next day they returned to the close, but Jessie refused to allow Tim to stay with Emily in the bungalow. It seemed the newly weds would have nowhere to live until Mick agreed to let them stay at No 5 while he and Yvonne were away on holiday

Emily persuaded Tim to hold a party at the Johnson house while Mick was away, and although this seemed a good idea, things turned nasty after Sotto ( one of Tim's ex jail mates ) turned up. He overheard Emily boasting that Tim had set him up for a beating while he was in prison, so in a act of revenge Sotto and his mate smashed Mick's wide screen TV.

Despite this Mick allowed Tim and Emily to continue living at No 5, until he decided to move away from the close after splitting up with Yvonne. Luckily Jimmy took pity on them and offered to let both Tim and Emily stay at his house.

Emily was anxious that Tim should stay out of trouble with the police by keeping on the right side of the law, but eventually agreed to let him return to a life of crime after he convinced her it was impossible for him to get a good job with a prison record.

Emily and TimLater she had cause to regret her decision when Tim went missing after doing a job with Christy Murray. He was still missing on Christmas day so when Emily discovered Christy had returned she confronted him about his disappearance. She was distraught after being told Tim had ended up in the Mersey after being thrown from the Lorry. Tim though was safe in hospital after being found washed up on the banks of the Mersey, and on Boxing day they were reunited.

While Tim continued his life of crime with new accomplice Steve Murray, Emily had taken steps to advance her career by convincing her boss to let her train as a stylist and beautician.
