CHAPTER: 13 EXCUSES, LIES AND TEARS

As Lindsey pulled her clothes on Callum sat on the bed watching in a trance, he couldn't believe that he'd had her and was again letting her get away.
He tensed suddenly as he spotted something that Lindsey had forgotten about.
" What’s that?" Callum asked rising from the bed.
" What’s what?" Lindsey asked in reply, she still hadn't realized.
" On that chain" Callum replied coming forward a little. Lindsey's stomach churned, how could she be so stupid, he was talking about the ring.
" Oh nothing" Lindsey tried to sound casual as she turned away from him and began to hastily button up her blouse.
" Don't give me that" he turned her to face him. She met his eyes perfectly and didn't try to back away from him. Callum lifted the chain up until he saw the ring. Lindsey though never took her eyes away from his face.

The ring sat in the palm of Callum's hand, he still couldn't look up at her as she continued to stare hard at him, she could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. She tried to think of something to say to him but couldn't as she saw the tension leave his body.
" You had it all this time?" he finally spoke as he looked up at her.
" Yes" she whispered in reply. It wasn't true, she had taken it from Bev after Dave gave it to her.
" But why?" Callum frowned, not understanding. Lindsey pulled away from him and walked to the balcony doors.
" Okay I admit it, I liked the ring, I liked it a lot. Anyway its not like I could afford a white gold ring. Its not like I'll ever be able to get anything like this again"
" You could" Callum offered stepping towards her.
" Callum please don't" Lindsey turned to face him, the tears were visible now and he knew she was going to cry no matter what happened now " You have to understand, I can't stay here, I belong in Liverpool, I-I'm happy there" Lindsey's voice said it all, she was searching for an excuse and he knew it.
" Yeah right" Callum muttered. He knew she was lying to him but there was no way he was going to force her to stay, there was no way he was going to beg and plead as something told him that if he did it would only upset her even more and that was the last thing he wanted.

Lindsey found herself looking at the floor, she couldn't face him, she couldn't bear to see the sudden sadness in his eyes.
When she did eventually bring herself to look up at him her chest heaved a sob. This man who she had been so convinced was bitter and heartless was almost rocking on his feet as he clung to his desk for support. This was no bitter and heartless man, this was a man who loved her and she was about to say a final goodbye to him, get on a plane and go back to what had lately been a miserable life.
Still she stood firm as she threw her arms around his neck. He seized her tightly never wanting to have to leave go. But he did. As Lindsey pulled back from the hug she could feel the hot tears beginning to sting her cheeks.

" Goodbye Callum" she whispered through a sob. Callum closed his eyes biting his lip, he knew there was nothing he could say. Lindsey saw the look of utter helplessness on his face and it burned her to the core. Callum had always, in her eyes, been a strong man whom nothing and no one could break through the defences of, and to see him like this now, through her, killed her. All the times she had wanted to hurt him she never could, and now when she didn't want to she was killing him.

She ran from the room and left him standing. Callum didn't open his eyes until he heard the slam of the door. Once he did only then did he drop to his knees . He couldn't believe that he had stayed so strong the last time she had ran out on him at the warehouse.

CHAPTER: 14 WATCHING LOVE LEAVE

An idea suddenly hit Callum, he knew what he had to do. He forced himself to his feet. He tried to remember what time Lindsey said her flight left but all he could remember was Lindsey's face as she had left. He knew that she was genuinely upset at having to leave him.
He made it to the airport and immediately checked the flight times. Lindsey's was set to leave in fifteen minutes. He dashed up the stairs, he immediately spotted her plane from the window, it was the only British airline there so it wasn't hard to spot. Callum did what he had to do and knew it was what she would want, it was his parting gift.

Then he saw her, Shelley was clearly having a go at her about something but Lindsey didn't look bothered. Lindsey's mind was clearly on other things and Callum could take a good guess at what they were. He watched her walk through security looking miserable, then she smiled, it was sad smile though it had a strange happiness about it, Callum smiled at this. She was sad to leave him but she had felt true happiness for a little while at least, some people could live forever and never feel true happiness, but she had.
Callum walked to the window once she was gone. He watched and waited, then he saw her one last time, he saw her climb the steps to the plane that was going to take her hundreds of miles away from him, but he smiled. He had had her for a little while at least. A tear strayed from his eye as he watched the plane take off. He quickly wiped it away and turned from the window. He took a deep breath before walking back to his car.

As he drove home he thought happy thoughts of the time he had spent with Lindsey, at least now he had happy memories of her.
Lindsey tipped her head back and sighed as she waited for the drinks tray to arrive. When it did she ordered Whiskey, Jack Daniels.
" I didn't know you drank whiskey Lindsey love" Jimmy commented.
" No I don't usually, I just remember trying it once and liking it" Lindsey replied smiling as she remembered Callum giving her a glass of Jack Daniels to calm her..... before he proposed.
Lindsey put her hand to her chest, she could feel the ring through her top. Perhaps she should start wearing it, she could always say that she got it cheap on holiday. Suddenly Lindsey found herself humming Chills and Fever.

CHAPTER: 15 THE LAST GIFT

Lindsey dumped her suitcase and sports bag on her bedroom floor as she flopped onto her bed. As she lay the thoughts of the previous night came to her.Suddenly she felt as if in a dream, she could feel Callum’s hands searching her body, she could feel his lips against hers. It felt good, but it wasn’t real and it never would be again. Lindsey sat up at this thought. She grabbed her sports bag, she wanted to make herself busy.

As she opened the zip her breath caught in her throat. She pulled the ivory case from her bag. It was beautiful, though she didn’t recall buying it. It had what appeared to be ancient symbols carved into it, though none of them seemed familiar, she didn’t recognize anything about it. She slowly undid the gold catch and opened the case. Her eyes filled with tears as she saw the contents. They were tears of happiness though as she took the Kerr revolver from the case. It was the black one that he had showed that first night. She ran her fingers over the silver pattern on the butt recalling every moment of the night she had fired it. She looked back down at the case and saw seven perfect shiny silver bullets. She ran her hand over them, each one had a tiny inscription, too tiny to really make out, but on the last bullet she made out the words ‘Always and forever’. There was a note in the lid which she removed carefully and read. It was from Callum. It read:

Lindsey,
In keeping with tradition each time the gun is passed on as a gift a silver bullet which is made for the gun is inscribed with a message, this is the seventh time it has been passed on so mine is the seventh bullet in the case. It reads always and forever, which I hope you understand is my feeling towards you. I have done what I believe you wanted me to do, given you something I know you wanted, twice!
There is nothing more I can really think of and there is a bit of a time issue, I have to get this to you before you board the plane. I don’t think there is any point in me telling you what you already know, but it’s not often you hear it, so I’ll say it anyway. I love you Lindsey and all I can do is hope you remember that and like your parting gift.
love
Callum.
P.S. Don’t feel bad about what happened between us, just remind yourself that it’s a thin line between love and hate.
