CHAPTER: 44 LEAVING

Once Callum was gone Lindsey collapsed back into her seat. Jackie ran straight up to her, but not with sympathy. Jackie pulled Lindsey up so that she was looking at her.
“ What the hell do you think you’re playing at!?” Jackie cried. Lindsey ran her hands down her face sighing deeply and getting a grip on her emotions.
“ I don’t....I don’t know, to be absolutely honest with you I don’t have the faintest clue” Jackie stepped back from her in shock.
“ I don’t believe you girl, really I don’t. You’re letting the one person who ever really loved you get away for reasons unknown!” Lindsey shook her head.
“ Mam I can’t go with him because of Kylie, you know that” Jackie turned away in disbelief.

“ Kylie wouldn’t care, the only thing she wants is for her mother to be happy and you’re happy with him! Do you think Kylie would be the first kid to move to another country, she definitely won’t be the last for gods sake Lindsey sort your head out, do something for yourself for once will you!” Lindsey looked at Jackie, the expression on her face calculating. She remembered those words, she remembered that moment. She was in the club with Callum and he was almost pleading with her to give him one moment she was coming up with any excuse, yet Callum had already known the real one, she was afraid of what Jimmy would do.

“ Callum if I spend the night with you can you just imagine what my Dad would be thinking, he’s already suspicious about the other night when I came to see you. Callum if anything ever did happen between us my Dad would go berserk, he’d never understand let alone approve and my Mam wouldn’t be much better” This had been the breaking point for Callum, this was when he handed her the cold facts of her existence.

“ For gods sake Lindsey do something for yourself for once will you! That’s your problem you know you spend all your time worrying about everyone else you forget about yourself. That’s why you’ll never be really happy, you’re so busy worrying about what other people will think that you don’t think about yourself. I mean come on when was the last time you done what you really wanted to do? You were always wrapped up in keeping everyone else happy that you didn’t keep yourself happy. You always worried about what Jimmy would think didn’t you, when you were choosing who was going to be your bloke you didn’t think about which one would please you, instead you worried about what Jimmy and Jackie would think!”

Lindsey realized what she had done now, the one thing Callum had wanted her more than anything to not do. She had been so wrapped up Jimmy’s view on their relationship that when it came down to it Kylie had merely been an excuse to cover up the real reason, she hadn’t wanted to hurt Jimmy anymore. She thought the family had been through enough and now that they were finally back on track she hadn’t wanted to spoil that, she hadn’t thought about herself. She glared now at her parents they were both stood in front of her. She could no longer blame Jackie, but Jimmy; she could blame him for a lot of things.

“ Lindsey? You still with us?” Jackie asked.
“ Yeah” Lindsey replied absently, she was looking at the clock, it was twenty past six ‘ Damn’ Lindsey snapped at herself, there was no way she had enough time to make it to Manchester airport for half past eight.
“ Lindsey?” Jimmy spoke his voice sharp. Lindsey turned and looked at them, she knew it would kill them, but it was something she had to do, for herself for a change.
“ I’m sorry Dad” she meant it, but she didn’t sound particularly sad as she quickly kissed both of them. “ I love you both okay and I’m sorry, but I have to do this, I have to do this one thing for myself” with that she ran down the steps. Lindsey ran out of the pub as fast as she possibly could. Jimmy dashed down the stairs after her, Jackie stood where Lindsey had kissed her, smiling.

“ Lindsey! Lindsey! Get back here!” Lindsey could hear Jimmy calling, she didn’t care.
Lindsey ran all the way home, Kylie was still up when she got there. Lindsey dismissed the babysitter and turned to Kylie.
“ Kylie honey I have to ask you something, now it’s real important okay” Kylie nodded “How would you like to go and live in Portugal?” Kylie’s eyes lit up at the suggestion “ But, but it’s with a man, a wonderful man.....” Kylie cut her off.
“ The one you and Granda are always arguing about, the one you’re in love with?” Lindsey nodded.
“ Yeah that’s the one”
“ I’d love to” Kylie grinned.
“ Right then, get the things you really want okay, only important stuff” Kylie nodded.

Lindsey came dashing down the stairs with two holdalls, suddenly she stopped there was an envelope on the floor, it had been shoved through the letterbox. Lindsey hastily picked it up. On the front the words Just incase were scrawled across the front in handwriting she instantly knew to be Callum’s. As she opened the envelopes she found two flight tickets for her and Kylie for the eight thirty flight. Kylie came bouncing down the stairs.

“ Come on we’d better hurry” As they dashed out the door Lindsey found herself muttering “ Son of a bitch” Somehow she believed that Callum knew for a fact she’d change her mind.
She was in for even more of a shock as she saw Jacqui Dixon waiting outside in her car.
“ Come on you, we don’t have much time to make it to Manchester” Lindsey shook her head in disbelief, how did Jacqui know where he was flying from.
“ How’d you know?” Lindsey asked once they had pulled away.
“ Tip off phone call, I had to drag you onto the eight thirty flight, then when I got to the bar I found out I didn’t have to drag you” Jacqui shrugged.
“ Was it Callum?” Jacqui shook her head.
“ No, some bloke called Sam, apparently he’s worried about Callum’s health but he doesn’t think you turning up in the seat next to him should kill him though. He says it’ll be a nice surprise for Callum, apparently he owes it to him” Jacqui explained as she put her foot down almost breaking the limit.

“ How long do you think it’ll take?” Lindsey asked clearly worried. Jacqui looked at her, she knew she couldn’t lie.
“ Do you want my totally honest answer?” Lindsey nodded, Jacqui guessed by her face that she already knew what it would be “ I don’t think we’ll make it, but hey catch a later flight, turn up on his doorstep, he’d definitely love that one” Jacqui grinned at Lindsey. Lindsey knew Jacqui was speaking the truth and for some reason she liked the idea of surprising him by turning up on his doorstep.

CHAPTER: 45 WAITING & HURRYING

Callum had never felt worse as he sat at the airport waiting, he had twenty five minutes before he had to board the plane and again leave Lindsey’s life in a mess, only this time his was in a mess too. He had left the tickets before he had even to Bar Brookie, he had known before he had stepped into the Bar that she was going to turn him down, again. He wondered if she had found them yet, little did he know she was anxiously on her way to join him, then again he already knew that even if she had, there was no chance of her making it in time. He still didn’t know how he had gotten there with over half an hour to spare.

Lindsey began to shake as the realization began to set in, it was now twenty five past eight, she had missed his flight. She was almost crying as she realized.
“ Hey come on” Jacqui chirped trying to sound happy and confidant for her “ Lets not forget plan B eh” Lindsey smiled, she started imagining his face as he answered the door to her.
“ Yeah you’re right” Lindsey replied brightening up. Jacqui smiled.
“ Always am” Lindsey turned to check on Kylie, she was falling asleep.
“ Hey come on you” Lindsey tapped her leg, Kylie looked up at her with tired, red eyes “ It’s not even half eight yet, come on we’re nearly there” Kylie smiled suddenly seeming bright again. She didn’t think about the fact that she hadn’t been able to say goodbye to her grandparents.

Callum was pacing up and down past the window, he could see his plane through it. It was now twenty five to and he and none of the other passengers had been told to go to the departure lounge yet. Sam returned from the queries desk. Callum turned to him, his face asking the question for him.

“ Last minute technical hitch” he shrugged, Callum and several other passengers who had been talking with Callum immediately scowled.
“ I told you, I flamin’ hate these airports, I’ll tell you if I could I’d be travelling by train” the others nodded in agreement. Sam wanted to tell him, he wanted to say that he had arranged to have Lindsey dragged here by someone who had the powers to persuade her, Jacqui Dixon. He stayed quiet though, he didn’t want to spoil the surprise.

“ Is it much longer?” Kylie asked in the typical whiney voice of a bored child.
“ We’re here!” Jacqui suddenly exclaimed as she finally spotted the airport sign showing you where to turn in. Lindsey jumped with more excitement than Kylie had. Lindsey wasn’t sure this was really what Kylie wanted, but she knew she’d adjust, just like she would.
It had taken them two hours and fifteen minutes to get there and although Lindsey knew it was going to be awkward getting another flight to Portugal, she didn’t mind, by this time tomorrow she would be living with the man she loved. It was nine o’clock and Kylie was oddly exhausted, it wasn’t typical of her, Lindsey wondered if it was the excitement of moving to another country.

CHAPTER: 46 RELIEF & C0-INCIDENCE

They strolled into the airport Kylie clinging to Lindsey filled with sheer excitement of moving somewhere new and unexplored. Jacqui glanced at the flight times and felt an overwhelming feeling wash over her, she couldn’t explain why she felt so good for someone else, but then again she knew what this meant to Lindsey. She tried to contain herself and sound calm as she spoke.

“ Lindsey?” she spoke the undertone of happiness unnoticed by Lindsey.
“ Yeah?” she turned looking more than a little nervous.
“ You’ll never guess” Jacqui spoke with a wide grin.
“ What?” Lindsey shrugged, she wasn’t ready for what Jacqui had in store for her.
“ His flight was delayed!, you haven’t missed it, he’s still here somewhere!” Lindsey threw her arms round Jacqui in a friendly hug that came from the depths of her. It was a thank you hug in the bottom of it all and Jacqui knew it.

Callum sat feeling more depressed than ever gazing out of the window at the plane that should have had him half way home by now. He wanted to cry, he wanted to let it all out, his frustration, his anger, his unreachable depths of sadness, his love for Lindsey, his hatred for himself, his exhaustion, his restlessness, but most of all his feeling of utter helplessness, he was sick of it all, his life felt like a barren wasteland, he had nothing, it all felt worthless and unbelievably empty. All he had in the world was Cloey and Rose’s family were fighting him for her. That’s how she hadn’t been there when he had first won Lindsey over. He sighed dropping his head into his hands, he didn’t let it all out though, he couldn’t he had become too expert at refraining himself from showing how he really felt. Besides he had already cried once that day, he didn’t want to weaken himself again. But it was more than that, he knew that if he started it would be an age before he could stop himself again.

Lindsey stood watching him from the top of the stairs. She could feel his pain even from there, his agony, confusion, frustration and helplessness emanated from him choking the air around him. Lindsey guessed just about everyone in the room could feel it. She slowly moved forward. Jacqui was at the check-in counter with Kylie, she had sent Lindsey to find Callum and talk to him while they could be alone.
Callum could sense the feeling of someone standing over him but he didn’t have the energy to look up, he couldn’t be bothered, he guessed it was probably only Sam anyway. He felt a hand on his shoulder, the touch felt familiar, then he heard her voice.

“ So seeing as we’ve got such a long wait are you going to get me a drink?” He spun to see her and nearly fell from his chair with shock. She smiled at him, looking as radiant to him as ever. He jumped to his feet, suddenly breathless. He didn’t know what to do, he was feeling confused.

“ You’re...are you...?” he was stuttering, it reminded Lindsey of when he had proposed.
“ Callum relax, yes I’m coming with you” It was with these words Lindsey suddenly realized what she was doing, and she felt great about it. Now it was her turn to get over excited, she threw her arms around his neck as he threw his arms around her waist.
As Callum and Lindsey embraced Jacqui made sure they were booked onto the flight. Lindsey's and Kylie's luggage was that sparce they were allowed to take it on board the plane as hand luggage. Once Jacqui had checked Lindsey and Kylie onto the flight she set off in search of her errant friend who had clearly gone looking for Callum.
Jacqui crept up behind Lindsey as she stood still held in Callum's grateful and relieved arms. Kylie though did not realize the moment of tenderness and interupted it without thought.

“ Is this the man we're going to live with?” Kylie asked eyeing Callum with a typical child's curiousity. Lindsey quickly jumped back from Callum's arms. Callum straightened himself and looked at Kylie, he was clearly already taken with the young girl. Lindsey remembered what Callum had said when she had confronted him about speaking to Kylie outside of school ' She's a very bubbly little girl, she's a lot like her mother' Lindsey smiled at her daughter.

“ Yes, yes honey, this is Callum” Kylie smiled.
“ I remember you, you gave me sweets when I came out of school” Callum glanced at Lindsey with a slight grin on his face, Lindsey smiled back, neither knew what to say “ He looks nice Mam, I like him” Kylie grinned up at Lindsey, Lindsey and Callum both breathed quiet sighs of relief in unison with each other and smiled.

CHAPTER: 47 ALL A MAN CAN WANT

It was at this point as they all seemed united in their happieness and relief that Callum's phone rang. Callum instantly recognized the number and his look of joy quickly vanished. It was Rose's mother, Diane. Lindsey looked at him with a questioning expression, he signalled to her to give him a minute alone as he walked a short distance away to take the phone call in private. Cloey had been living with her grandparents for the last several month now, they refused to allow Callum custody, it was all he could do not to reveal that he was actually the child's father.
Sam returned and soon asked Lindsey what was wrong and if she knew who Callum was on the phone to.

“ No Sam I don’t, he just walked off and asked me to give him a minute, whoever it is they’ve spoilt his good mood” It was just as Lindsey did this that Callum suddenly seemed to almost collapse as a broad grin of disbelief crossed his face. He clicked the flap on his phone shut and began to laugh as he clung to a chair. Lindsey immediately ran to his side, but before she could ask what was going on he swept her into his arms lifting her from the ground as he continued to laugh. Sam soon joined them along with Jacqui and Kylie.

“ What is it Callum? Who was that on the phone?” Callum released Lindsey and as he went to speak he sounded out of breath.
“ That was Diane on the phone” Sam clearly knew what Callum was about to say, Lindsey though had not realized “ They’re dropping the case, I’m getting custody!” he suddenly cried. Lindsey suddenly realized what Callum was talking about and threw her arms around his neck.
“ Oh Callum that’s great!” Lindsey cried as she pressed her lips to his in sheer joy, she knew what Cloey meant to him, and she was also glad that she had made her decision to leave with him. She knew in that second she was doing the right thing.

“ I can’t believe this” Callum shook his head “ It’s like.....after all these years I finally have a...well a life....a reason to be here, I have all I could have ever wanted” Callum smiled at Kylie “ I now have two kids and.....” he turned to Lindsey taking her face in his hands “ the most wonderful woman in this world.....Lindsey?” he suddenly spoke with a questioning tone. Lindsey believed she knew what he was about to say, but let him continue anyway “ If I asked again.....” Lindsey smiled softly at him and took the ring from her pocket.

“ Go ahead” she handed him the ring. Callum drew a deep breath. Jacqui and Sam looked on eagerly.
“ Lindsey, will you marry me?” It was simple and easy, but Callum knew there was no need to make a speech, Lindsey knew how he felt about her, he didn’t need to tell her. Lindsey grinned warmly at him. Callum suddenly felt as though he were floating as she gave him her hand to slip the ring on. Lindsey threw her arms around his neck as they kissed passionately and warmly.

It suddenly came over the tannoy they could now board their flight. Jacqui and Lindsey embraced warmly. Jacqui would miss Lindsey, they had only just really became friends. As they made their way to the departure lounge Lindsey realized Sam wasn’t with them.
“ Isn’t Sam coming?” she suddenly asked.
“ No, he has business over here” Callum didn’t tell her it was the business of hunting down the man who had killed his fiancé not so long ago. Callum suddenly stopped and looked Lindsey hard in the eye. “ Lindsey, are you.....” Lindsey knew what he was going to ask.
“ Callum, I’ve never more sure of anything in my life, I want to be with you and I am going to be with you. Okay” Callum smiled at her and shook his head. He still couldn’t believe this was finally happening to him.
“ Well what can I say, I have everything a man could want” With that final comment they passed through customs and were finally on their way ‘home’

The End.......
